❓FAQs

NSW uses a selection-based invitation system for the NSW 491 nomination. You cannot apply directly for nomination — instead, NSW selects candidates from SkillSelect who meet the eligibility criteria and then invites them to apply for state nomination.

Selection is competitive and based on factors such as occupation demand, points, English level, and regional labour shortages.

It depends on the NSW pathway you are targeting. NSW typically offers streams for applicants currently living and working in regional NSW, applicants offshore with occupations in demand, and applicants with a job offer in regional NSW.

Living or working in regional NSW gives you an advantage, but offshore applicants can still be considered if their occupation meets specific criteria.

A job offer is not mandatory for all NSW pathways. However, a job offer from a regional NSW employer can significantly increase your chances, especially in health, trades, engineering, ICT, and community services.

“Regional NSW” includes all areas outside of Sydney, Newcastle, and Wollongong. Eligible regions include, for example, Central West, Riverina, Northern Inland, Mid North Coast, Southern Inland, Orana, and Far West. These areas actively seek skilled workers in industries experiencing shortages.

Processing generally takes around 6–8 weeks, depending on the number of applications and document verification requirements.

After NSW approves your 491 nomination, Home Affairs processing for the 491 visa can take 9–18 months, depending on document completeness and background checks.

You must prepare:

  • Valid
    skills assessment
  • EOI in SkillSelect
  • Proof of residence (if applying from NSW)
  • Employment evidence (payslips, contract, tax records)
  • Job offer letter (if applicable)
  • English test results
  • Passport and ID
  • Updated CV
  • Evidence supporting your claims in the EOI

Incomplete evidence may lead to NSW refusing or not finalising your nomination.
