ANZSCO Codes

Each skilled visa occupation (491, 494, 189, 190, 186, etc.) has a matching ANZSCO code

A numerical classification system for occupations.

Used by assessing authorities to verify skills and experience.

Mismatched job duties = risk of refusal.

What Is an ANZSCO Code?

The Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) is a coding system that groups jobs by skill level and duties. Every skilled visa requires the applicant’s nominated occupation to align with an ANZSCO code, which is then used for Skills Assessment, EOI, CSOL eligibility, and state nomination.

Why It Matters

You must nominate an ANZSCO code when submitting an EOI.

Skills Assessments are granted only if your experience matches the code duties

Using the wrong code can cause refusal or delay

Common Mistakes

Choosing the wrong code (e.g. Accountant vs. Finance Manager).

Job duties not matching ANZSCO description → refusal risk at skills assessment.

Using outdated ANZSCO versions instead of the current CSOL-linked list.

Employers copying generic job ads without aligning tasks to ANZSCO.

How ANZSCO Works

Code Structure

Major Group (1 digit): e.g. 2 = Professionals.

Sub-Major Group (2 digits): e.g. 25 = Health Professionals.

Unit Group (4 digits): e.g. 2541 = Midwifery and Nursing Professionals.

Occupation (6 digits): e.g. 254111 = Registered Nurse (General).

Purpose in Migration

Skills Assessments – Authorities like Engineers Australia, ACS, VETASSESS, and AHPRA check your duties against ANZSCO tasks.

Visa EligibilityDHA requires your nominated ANZSCO to appear on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) or DAMA list.

Employer Compliance – For 482 / 494 / 186 visas, employers must prove job descriptions align with ANZSCO duties

❓ ANZCO Code Frequently Ask Question

Only one per visa. It must match your Skills Assessment.

No. You’d need to withdraw and re-lodge.

Yes. Your job duties must align, not the title.

Not all — but you must meet most, especially the core ones.

Pick the one with the best duty match and most visa options.
