Engineers Australia Skills Assessment: Pathways, the CDR and 2026–27 Fees
Engineers Australia assesses every engineering occupation for skilled migration. Your degree decides the pathway, and the pathway decides the work.
Quick answer
The Engineers Australia skills assessment confirms your engineering qualification and category for a skilled visa. An accredited or Accord-recognised degree uses a document check from $346.50. Everyone else writes a competency demonstration report, at $1,034 for 2026–27. Outcomes generally hold for three years.

What the Engineers Australia assessment decides
Engineers Australia is the assessing authority for engineering occupations on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). Its migration skills assessment confirms two things. Your qualification supports an engineering category, and your nominated occupation fits that category.
The four categories are Professional Engineer, Engineering Technologist, Engineering Associate and Engineering Manager. Each maps to a qualification benchmark, from a four-year professional degree down to a two-year advanced diploma.
You nominate the occupation, and the category follows from it. Settle the ANZSCO code from duties first.
The pathway fork: accredited, Accord or CDR
A skills assessment for engineers starts here. Your degree's accreditation decides how much work the file takes.
| Pathway | Who uses it | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Australian accredited | Graduates of Engineers Australia accredited programs | Document-based check of the qualification and identity |
| Accord pathways | Degrees accredited under the Washington Accord, Sydney Accord or Dublin Accord in a signatory country | Document-based check; the accord signatory register decides eligibility, by program and year |
| Competency demonstration report | Everyone whose qualification none of the above covers | A full CDR assessment: three career episodes, a summary statement and continuing professional development |
The accord registers govern, not a university's own claims. Signatory status changes by year of admission, so check the program and the completion year together.
Engineers Australia fees for 2026–27
Engineers Australia fees step up each financial year. These are the current figures from its own fees page.
| Service | Fee (incl. GST) |
|---|---|
| Australian accredited qualification | $346.50 |
| Accord qualification assessment | $555.50 |
| Standard competency demonstration report | $1,034 |
| CDR with skilled employment assessment | $1,512.50 |
| Fast-track add-on | $396 |
| Review | $368.50 |
| Appeal | $704 |
The skilled employment add-on dates your employment for points claims. Engineering Managers must include it. Senior points-claimers usually should.
Timing, English and validity
How much time do engineers in Australia take for skill assessment? The queue is the honest answer. Files have recently reached an assessor about fifteen weeks after lodgement. The fast-track option buys assignment within about twenty business days.
The clock starts when Engineers Australia confirms the file is complete. English is evidenced at lodgement, from a secure test centre, taken within the last three years. Engineers Australia publishes its own score table per test, in the current MSA booklet.
A positive engineering skills assessment generally holds for three years from issue. Lodge the expression of interest and visa while it is current.
What sinks EA files, and the document set
- Career episodes that describe the team or the company, not your own engineering work.
- Generated or copied CDR text. The screening catches it, and the outcome is severe.
- Employment evidence with one layer only. Every claimed period needs the reference letter plus an independent secondary document.
- A qualification that does not support the nominated occupation's category.
- Writing to an outdated booklet edition. The current edition's rules govern format and evidence.
Unpaid and stipend work does not count as skilled employment. Paid-at-market is the test.
How to apply
- Confirm occupation and pathwaySettle the code from duties. Check the accreditation registers before assuming a CDR.
- Build the fileQualification records, English evidence, two-layer employment proof, and the CDR where required.
- Lodge and hold the lineApply through the EA portal, pay the 2026–27 fee, and respond fast to any request.
An engineers australia msa done cleanly the first time beats any review or appeal on cost and months.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the EA assessment cost?
For 2026–27 the standard competency demonstration report assessment costs $1,034 including GST. Adding the skilled employment assessment takes it to $1,512.50. Accord qualification assessments cost $555.50, and Australian accredited qualifications $346.50. A fast-track add-on is $396. Those figures come from the Engineers Australia fees page read on 26 September 2026, and they step up each July.
How much does a skills assessment cost for engineers in Australia?
Between $346.50 and $1,512.50, depending on pathway and add-ons. Accredited Australian degrees sit at the bottom of that range. Overseas degrees without Accord recognition carry the CDR fee of $1,034, before any employment assessment. Budget the fast-track separately if timing is tight. Other occupations pay their own authority's fee, which the skills assessment hub tables with checked dates.
How much time do engineers in Australia take for skill assessment?
Recent files have waited about fifteen weeks for an assessor, and the assessment follows that queue. The paid fast-track option buys assignment to an assessor within about twenty business days, not a guaranteed outcome. The clock only starts when Engineers Australia confirms your file is complete. A decision-ready pack at lodgement is the one lever fully in your control.
How long is a skill assessment from Engineers Australia valid?
A positive outcome generally holds for three years from its issue date. Home Affairs accepts it for the period the authority gives it, capped at three years. Both the expression of interest and the visa application should sit inside that window. Where timing is tight, sequence the assessment first and the English or points evidence in parallel.
What happens if my skills assessment expires?
An expired assessment cannot support an invitation or a visa application, and no letter argues around that. The remedy is a fresh application to Engineers Australia, at the current fee and booklet edition. Rules move between editions, so an old CDR may need rework rather than resubmission. Diarise the expiry at grant of the outcome, and lodge well before it.
What documents are needed for skill assessment in Australia?
For Engineers Australia, four groups. Identity documents, qualification certificates with full transcripts, English evidence from a secure test centre, and two-layer employment proof. That means a detailed reference letter plus an independent secondary document for every claimed period. CDR applicants add three career episodes, a summary statement and a CPD list. Other authorities set their own lists, so check the relevant page on this hub.
Where to go next
A positive outcome opens the points-tested and employer routes engineers use most. These pages carry them.
