Skills Assessment for Australian Visas

Two things, almost everywhere. A qualification check against Australian standards for your occupation, and an employment check at the occupation's skill level. Authorities then add their own instruments. ACS dates when your experience became professional, and Engineers Australia may want a competency report. TRA can require a practical, while ANMAC leans on registration. The authority's own criteria page for your occupation is the operative document.

The Skilled Occupation List names one beside every occupation, and it is never your choice. Trades go to TRA and most professional roles to VETASSESS. Nurses go to ANMAC, early childhood to ACECQA, and engineers to Engineers Australia. School teachers go to AITSL, and ICT occupations to ACS. Accountants, social workers and health roles have their own bodies. Settle the code first, because the code decides the authority.

Between $395 and about $1,500 for the main assessment, depending on the authority. ANMAC sits at the bottom for registered nurses, ACS at the top for its General Skills pathway. Weeks, not days, and the authority sets the pace. ANMAC states up to six weeks, AITSL four to six, and VETASSESS about seven. ACS publishes no fixed window and processes complete files as soon as possible. Every authority's clock starts when the file is complete. Documentation quality, not queue position, is the variable you actually control.

Skills assessment validity follows one rule. Home Affairs accepts the outcome for the period the authority gives it, capped at three years from issue. ANMAC outcomes run two years, and most others run the full three. Both the expression of interest and the visa application must sit inside the window. An expired assessment supports nothing, however strong the file around it.

Often, yes. The Skills in Demand visa requires one only where the rules name your occupation and passport country combination. Some nomination streams demand one too. Many 482 applicants never need it. The 186 Direct Entry stream is the opposite: an assessment is generally required. Yes. Every authority accepts direct applications, and none requires an agent. The risk is not the form; it is the strategy. The occupation call, the pathway choice and the evidence standard decide outcomes, and they are where files fail. Use the authority's own checklist if self-lodging, and take advice where the occupation or pathway is genuinely contestable.

Sometimes. ACS runs a Recognition of Prior Learning route built on experience instead of an ICT degree. TRA assesses demonstrated trade skills, with training and experience traded against each other. Most professional authorities, though, treat the qualification as non-negotiable. Where yours is the weak point, three honest answers exist. A different occupation, a top-up qualification, or an experience-based route where one is offered.

A few routes allow it. ACECQA's early childhood teacher assessment has no experience requirement at all. ACS runs a Qualification-only pathway aimed at the 485 graduate visa, and ANMAC's Modified assessment needs registration rather than experience. Most points-oriented pathways, though, want a year or more at skill level. The authority's occupation page states the exact requirement.

The common core: identity documents, qualification certificates with full transcripts, and employment references carrying dates, weekly hours and duties. Authorities then add their own layer, from English evidence to project reports to regulator-direct verifications. Each guide on this hub lists its authority's set. Build the file to the authority's checklist, not to a generic one.

Exemptions attach to visas, not to people. Points-tested applicants are effectively never exempt. Some employer-sponsored applicants are exempt, depending on occupation, passport country and stream. A small set can rely on alternative evidence the rules name. Treat any claimed exemption as something to verify on the current Home Affairs page, never as received wisdom.

Once expired, a fresh assessment is required at the current fee and criteria. Some authorities, VETASSESS among them, sell a cheaper renewal inside the validity window.

Every authority runs a review or appeal lane, with fees and windows of its own. VETASSESS reviews within 90 days, ACS appeals at two levels, AITSL appeals at $938. Most failures trace to evidence gaps or an over-ambitious occupation call, both fixable. Diagnose before re-lodging, because an unchanged file buys the same outcome twice.
