The Subclass 820 visa is a temporary Partner Visa that allows individuals in a genuine and ongoing relationship with an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia while waiting for the Subclass 801 permanent visa. This visa is the first stage of the Partner Visa process. 

To be eligible for Subclass 820, you must: 

  • Be in a genuine and ongoing relationship with your sponsor (an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen). 
  • Be in Australia when you apply for this visa. 
  • Meet health and character requirements. 
  • Provide evidence of your relationship (photos, joint finances, etc.). 

No, a job offer is not required for Subclass 820. This visa is relationship-based, and eligibility is determined by the nature of your relationship with your sponsor.

To apply for Subclass 820, you must lodge your application online through the Department of Home Affairs’ ImmiAccount. You will need to submit all required documents, including evidence of your relationship, identity documents, and police clearances. 

You will need to submit the following documents: 

  • Proof of your relationship (photos, joint activities, correspondence). 
  • Identity documents (passport, birth certificate). 
  • Police clearances from any countries where you’ve lived for more than 12 months in the last 10 years. 
  • Health examination results. 
  • Evidence of your ongoing relationship with your sponsor. 

The processing time for Subclass 820 varies depending on factors such as application volume and case complexity. On average, it takes around 12 to 18 months for the Subclass 820 visa to be processed. 

Yes, you can include children under the age of 18 in your application. They must meet the eligibility criteria and be added to the visa application at the time of submission. 

Yes, you must meet health and character requirements. This includes undergoing a medical examination and providing police clearance certificates from countries where you’ve lived for more than 12 months in the past 10 years

The Subclass 820 visa does not have a points requirement as it is a relationship-based visa, not a points-tested visa
