❓Frequently Asked Questions

The Skilled Migration pathway allows qualified workers with occupations in demand to apply for permanent residency based on their skills, qualifications, English ability, and points score—not employer sponsorship. It includes visas 189, 190, 491, and PR completion through 191.

  • Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent Visa (PR)
  • Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa (PR)
  • Subclass 491 – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional)
  • Subclass 191 – Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional)

Each visa has different requirements for points, state nomination, and regional obligations.

  • 189: No state or sponsor; very competitive; high points needed
  • 190: PR visa with state sponsorship + 2-year state commitment
  • 491: 5-year regional provisional visa leading to PR via 191

You must generally have:

  • An occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)
  • A positive Skills Assessment
  • Sufficient points (usually 65+ minimum)
  • Competent or higher English
  • Age under 45 (exceptions apply in limited cases)

States may also impose additional nomination requirements.

The points test awards points for:

  • Age
  • English level
  • Work experience
  • Qualifications
  • Australian study
  • NAATI CCL
  • Professional Year
  • Partner skills
  • State/regional nomination

Higher points = faster invitation.

An EOI is a mandatory online application in SkillSelect showing your intention to apply for a skilled visa. It is required before receiving a 189 invitation or a 190/491 state nomination.

There is no fixed cut-off, but general trends are:

189: Often 85–95+ points

190: Around 70–85 points depending on the state

491: Usually 65–75+ points with state criteria

Points change based on demand and quota.

The 491 is a 5-year provisional visa requiring you to live and work in regional Australia.
After 3 years of meeting residence + income requirements, you can apply for PR through Subclass 191.

Yes. A positive Skills Assessment is required for:

For PR via 191, you do not need a new Skills Assessment—your 491 eligibility covers it.

It depends on your profile:

  • 190 is often the fastest if you meet a state’s priority occupation list
  • 189 is competitive and invitation-based (highest points needed)
  • 491191 may be the most reliable if you’re willing to live regionally

A personalised assessment is essential to avoid wasted time.

The Subclass 494 is a regional employer-sponsored visa, not points-tested, but it is often used as an alternative Skilled Migration pathway for applicants whose occupation is competitive or not getting invitations.

It allows you to live and work in a designated regional area for up to 5 years, and after 3 years of meeting income + residence requirements, you can transition to PR through the Subclass 191 visa.
Many candidates choose 494 when:

  • Their points are too low for 189/190
  • They work in a regional area
  • Their employer is willing to sponsor them
  • They want a high-certainty route to PR via 191
