❓PR Pathways
Frequently Asked Questions

Australia’s PR pathways include Skilled Migration (189/190/491191), Employer-Sponsored PR (186 TRT/DE), Graduate to PR pathways (485 → Skilled/Employer routes), Partner & Family visas, and Business/Investor PR (Subclass 888). The best pathway depends on your occupation, skills, age, English level, and current visa status.

The right PR pathway depends on factors like your occupation eligibility, points score, state requirements, work history, and English ability. Our Free PR Eligibility Check compares your profile against all PR streams and recommends the strongest route.

In most PR pathways, a skills assessment is mandatory — especially 189, 190, 491, and 186 Direct Entry.
However, Partner visas, Employer 186 TRT, and some Business visa streams may not require a skills assessment. It depends on your pathway and occupation.

There is no fixed minimum for 189/190/491 visas. However:

  • 189 invitations usually go to applicants with 75–85+ points.
  • 190 depends on each state’s nomination criteria.
  • 491 can invite applicants with lower points if their occupation is in demand regionally.

For many applicants, Employer-Sponsored PR (Subclass 186) is faster and more predictable because it does not rely on points or state invitations.

If your employer is willing to sponsor you and your occupation is eligible, 186 can be the strongest pathway.

  • 189: Independent PR, no state or employer needed.
  • 190: Permanent PR with state nomination, must commit to living in that state.
  • 491: Provisional 5-year visa leading to 191 PR after 3 years of regional work and meeting the income threshold.

Processing times vary depending on your pathway:

  • 189/190 PR: ~6–10 months
  • 491 to 191 PR: 3 years of regional residence + processing
  • 186 PR: ~4–8 months
  • Partner PR (309/100): 2–3 years
  • Business PR (888): varies based on stream
Timelines depend on your documents, case complexity, and Department of Home Affairs priorities.

Yes — some PR pathways do not require your occupation to be on the CSOL, including:

  • 186 TRT (Employer-Sponsored PR)
  • Partner visas
  • Some Business/Investor PR streams
If your occupation is not listed, we will recommend alternative PR routes.

Common refusal reasons include:

  • Incorrect or outdated documents
  • Missing evidence of skilled employment
  • Skills assessment issues
  • Incorrect points claims
  • Insufficient English evidence
  • Employer nomination problems
  • Health or character issues
We provide a full pre-lodgement audit to reduce risk.

Yes — graduates commonly move to PR via:

  • 189/190/491 skilled pathways
  • Employer-sponsored PR (186 TRT)
  • Partner visas
  • Regional job pathways leading to 191 PR
A strong job strategy during 485 is essential for securing PR.
