💡 Overview

The Genuine Student (GS) requirement is now the key eligibility test for Student Visa (Subclass 500) applicants. It replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement in March 2024, under Ministerial Direction 111.

The GS requirement ensures that students applying for visas are genuinely committed to studying in Australia and have a clear study plan that aligns with their future career goals.

📜 What Is the GS Requirement?

The GS requirement asks applicants to show:

A genuine intention to study in Australia.

A clear link between their chosen course and career pathway.

That they have adequate funds to support themselves while studying.

That they are likely to comply with visa conditions.

What Happened to GTE?

Before March 2024: All Student Visa applicants had to satisfy the GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) requirement.

Now: GTE has been replaced by GS for Student Visa applications.

Visitor and short-term visas may still reference GTE, but for students it is no longer applicable.

Step-by-Step: Meeting the GS Requirement

⚠️ Common Mistakes

Submitting a generic Statement of Purpose without clear study goals.

Choosing a course unrelated to past studies or career path.

Not showing enough funds to cover study and living costs.

Weak English scores with no explanation.

Confusing GS with GTE in the application.

📋 Required Documents

GS Statement of Purpose |study plan + career alignment

Academic transcripts and qualifications.

Proof of enrolment (CoE).

Financial evidence – bank statements, sponsor letters, scholarships.

English test results – IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, etc.

Health & character documents - medical, police check

🌟 Why This Matters

Without GS, a Student Visa can be refused.

A strong GS application improves chances of approval and helps avoid costly refusals.

Shows DHA you are serious about studying, not just using a student visa as a migration pathway.
