What Is the Balance of Family Test?

Find out how the Balance of Family Test affects eligibility for Australian family visas and how to meet its requirements.

Quick Overview

The Balance of Family Test is a key requirement for certain Australian family visas, including Parent and Remaining Relative visas. It requires applicants to demonstrate that a majority of their close family members live in Australia, ensuring strong family ties to the country.

What Is the Balance of Family Test?

The Balance of Family Test requires visa applicants to show that more than half of their children (or close family members) reside permanently in Australia. This test helps the Department of Home Affairs assess the genuineness of family connections and the likelihood of the applicant settling in Australia.

Who Must Meet the Balance of Family Test?

Applicants for Parent Visas (Subclass 103, 804, and contributory Parent visas).

Applicants for the Remaining Relative Visa (Subclass 835).

Some other family visas may require this test as part of eligibility.

Applicants for Partner Visas or Child Visas generally do not need to meet this test.

Why Is the Test Important?

It supports Australia’s migration policy to prioritise family unity and settlement.

Ensures that family visa places are allocated to those with strong family ties to Australia.

Applicants who fail the test may have their visa applications refused.

How Is the Test Calculated?

To pass, more than half of the applicant’s children must reside in Australia permanently.

The test counts the number of the applicant’s children who live permanently in Australia versus those who live overseas.

If an applicant has no children, other close family relationships may be considered.

The Department uses official documents to verify the residence status of family members.

Exceptions and Special Cases

In some cases, if an applicant does not have enough children in Australia, other close relatives residing permanently in Australia may be considered.

Special consideration may be given in compassionate or compelling circumstances. Shape
