The Subclass 417 Working Holiday Visa

  • Work legally while traveling across Australia
  • No job offer required before applying
  • Can be extended with a second or third visa under specific conditions

The 417 is part of Australia’s Working Holiday Maker program. It is sometimes searched as a short stay visa 417, but it is a 12-month working holiday visa, not a short-stay visitor visa. The subclass 600 tourist stream is the option if you only want to travel.

Is it 417 or 462 — which working holiday visa applies?

Whether you search visa 417, working holiday 417 or the 417 visa Australia offers, your passport decides, not your preference. The subclass 417 visa covers 19 partner countries. Other partner countries use the subclass 462 Work and Holiday visa, which has different rules. On the 417 vs 462 question, one rule matters most. If you have been in Australia on a 462, you cannot get a 417.

Maximum agePassport countries
35Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Republic of Korea, United Kingdom
30Belgium, Estonia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan

The 417 visa age limit is tested on the day you apply. You can lodge up to the day before your 36th birthday, or your 31st where the limit is 30. Turning over the limit while the application is processed does not matter.

What we see in practice

The age limits for Cyprus, Finland, Germany and the Republic of Korea rose to 35 on 1 July 2026. Plenty of older guides still say 30. Check your own passport against the current list before you rule yourself out.

How is the 462 visa different from the 417?

The subclass 462 Work and Holiday visa is the other half of the program. It covers 31 countries that are not on the 417 list. They include the United States, China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brazil and Spain. The 462 visa looks similar from the outside, but its entry tests are harder.

They are Ecuador, Greece, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, San Marino, Slovenia, Thailand and Turkey. The education test ranges from school completion for United States passport holders to tertiary qualifications only for Thailand.

Specified work does not transfer between the two visas. Work that counts for a second 462 may not count for a 417, and the reverse.

Eligibility Criteria & Points Test

There is no points test for the 417. The 417 visa eligibility rules below apply to every applicant. To apply for the Subclass 417 Working Holiday Visa, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Age: Between 18-35 years old (up to 30 years for some countries)
  • Health and Character: Must meet Australian health and character requirements
  • No dependents: You cannot bring children or dependents under this visa
  • Valid Passport: Passport from an eligible country

What are the other 417 visa requirements?

  • Enough money. For your fare out of Australia and to support yourself at the start of your stay.
  • A genuine working holiday. Your main purpose must be a holiday, with work to fund it.
  • No previous 462 in Australia. Having been in Australia as the holder of a Work and Holiday visa rules out a 417.
  • No more than two previous 417s. The third visa is the last.

Second and third working holiday visa

A second working holiday visa needs at least three months of specified work done on your first 417. A third working holiday visa needs at least six months done on your second. Specified work means approved types of work in approved regional or remote postcodes.

Some passport holders, including United Kingdom passport holders under the free trade agreement arrangements, do not need specified work for a second or third visa. Confirm your passport is covered before relying on it.

Second and third visas can be applied for in or outside Australia. You must be in the same place when the visa is granted as when you applied.

What we see in practice

Three months means at least 88 calendar days worked at full-time equivalence, and six months means at least 179. Extra hours cannot compress that into fewer days, and part-time work has to run proportionally longer. Days overseas and unpaid weather days do not count. Start specified work early in your first year so a delayed payslip does not cost you the second visa.

417 visa processing time — how long does it take?

Home Affairs reports a record number of Working Holiday Makers and is prioritising onshore applications. Some offshore applications may take several months. Published processing times are a guide only.

Do not book flights or commit to work until your visa is granted. You must be in the right place at grant, so do not travel to Australia while a first 417 is being decided.

What happens after a working holiday visa australia stay?

The 417 is temporary and has no PR pathway of its own. Many holders later move to study, employer sponsorship or skilled migration. Each has its own criteria, and the 417 itself earns no points toward them. If you want to stay, get advice before your visa ends, because a gap in status limits your options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for Subclass 417 if I am outside Australia?

Yes, you can apply from outside Australia. For your first working holiday visa you must be outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is granted. A second or third 417 can be applied for in or outside Australia.

How long can I stay on a Working Holiday Visa?

You can stay for up to 12 months. You must first enter within 12 months of the grant, and the 12 months of stay run from your first entry.

Can I work while on Subclass 417?

Yes, you can work in Australia during your stay. You may also be able to extend your stay by completing specified work in regional Australia. You cannot work for one employer for more than six months without permission.

Can I extend my Subclass 417 visa?

Yes, you may be eligible for a second year if you complete 3 months of specified work in regional Australia. A third year needs six months of specified work on your second visa.

What is a 417 visa in Australia?

A 417 visa is the Working Holiday visa for young adults from 19 partner countries. It allows a 12-month holiday funded by short-term work, with up to two further visas after specified work.

How long can I work on a 417 visa?

You can work for the whole 12 months, but no more than six months with any one employer unless Home Affairs gives written permission or an exemption applies. You can also study for up to four months.

What are the differences between the 417 and 462 visas?

Your passport decides which applies. The 462 Work and Holiday visa covers other countries, can carry caps, and often needs education and English evidence. A person who has been in Australia on a 462 cannot later get a 417.

Can I apply for PR on a 417 visa?

Not directly. The 417 has no PR pathway. You would need a different visa, such as employer sponsorship or a skilled visa, and must meet its criteria in full.

Is it hard to get a 417 visa?

For an eligible passport holder with clean health and character, the criteria are simple. The common problems are age, a previous 462, undisclosed convictions and applying from the wrong location. Processing is currently slower for offshore applicants.

How much money do you need for a 417 visa?

You must show enough money for a fare out of Australia and to support yourself at the start of your stay. Home Affairs may ask for bank statements, so have them ready when you apply.

What jobs can I do on a 417 visa?

Any lawful job, in any industry. Only specified work in approved industries and postcodes counts toward a second or third working holiday visa.

What is the 417 visa processing time?

There is no fixed 417 visa processing time. Home Affairs is prioritising onshore applications, and some offshore applications may take several months. Check the Home Affairs processing times page before making travel plans.

Can I get a 462 visa instead of a 417?

Only if your passport is on the 462 list. Your passport decides which visa applies, and no country is on both lists. A first 462 is also refused if you have already been in Australia on a 417.

How are 88 days of specified work counted?

As at least 88 calendar days at full-time equivalence for your industry. Weekends inside a full-time run count, so three calendar months of full-time work is enough. Extra hours cannot shorten it, and part-time work takes longer. Keep every payslip, because they are the evidence Home Affairs relies on.

A working holiday is the start. Plan what comes after it.

A free eligibility check tells you whether a student, employer-sponsored or skilled visa could follow your 417.
